The impact of thermomechanical pulp fiber modifications on thermoplastic lignin composites

Cellulose and lignin are abundant renewable biopolymers that can be used for the manufacture of new, environmentally friendly materials. The objective this study was to produce composites kraft lignin, which were reinforced with cellulosic thermomechanical pulp (TMP) fibers. Furthermore, fibers chemically modified resulting in cross-linking or increased hydrophobicity. Ideally, these modifications improve interaction between components composite. effects on tensile strength thermal properties investigated, interactions examined by infrared spectroscopy scanning electron microscopy. When cross-linked polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE), composite significantly improved. Depending amount PEGDE added, 16–34%, Young's Modulus 6–18%, but at same time strain break remained same. Similarly, using PEGDE, free plasticizer (PEG) could reduced, also improved water-resistance According microscopy, all chemical treatments compatibility matrix.
